BILATERAL RELATIONS

In 1972, National Leader, Heydar Aliyev, visited Lebanon.

In December 30, 1991, the independence of the Republic of Azerbaijan was recognized by Lebanese Republic.

In September 18, 1992, protocol had been signed for the creation of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

In November 19-20, 1997, with specific instructions of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Heydar Aliyev, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hasan Hasanov, made an official visit to Lebanon meeting with the Prime Minister of Lebanon, the Chairman of the Parliament and a number of senior government officials.

In December 26, 1997, with the decree of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan the ambassador of Azerbaijan in Arab Republic of Egypt, Israfil Vakilov, was simultaneously appointed the ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary of the Republic of Azerbaijan in Lebanon.

In January 3, 1998, with the edict of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, the Counselor of Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lebanese Republic, Nazih Gassub, was appointed Honorary Council.

In December 9-11, 1998, the member countries of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation that took place in Tehran following the 8th Summit Meeting, President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Heydar Aliyev, held meeting with the President of Lebanese Republic, Elias Hraoui and the Prime Minister of Lebanon, Rafic Hariri.

In February 11-12, 1998, through the invitation of National Leader Heydar Aliyev, the Prime Minister of Lebanon, Rafic Hariri, had an official visit to the Republic of Azerbaijan. Within the framework of aforementioned visit four documents have been signed for the purposes of developing economic relations between two countries.

In April 12-13, 2007, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Elmar Mammadyarov had an official visit to Lebanese Republic. During the visit Elmar Mammadyarov held meeting with the President of Lebanon, Emile Lahoud, Prime Minister Fouad Siniora, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Fawzi Salloukh, the Chairman of the Parliament, Nabih Berri, Member of Parliament Walid Jumblatt and former President Amine Gemayel.

In October, 2008, with the Presidential decree of the Republic of Azerbaijan the ambassador of the Republic of Azerbaijan in Syrian Arab Republic, Mahir Aliyev, was appointed in the meanwhile the ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary of the Republic of Azerbaijan in Lebanese Republic.

In November 18-22, 2010, with the invitation of the Minister of Sports and Youth of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Azad Rahimov, the Minister of Sports and Youth of Lebanese Republic, Ali Hussein Abdallah have visited Azerbaijan with representative staff.

In November 20, 2014, by the Presidential decree No. 886 of the of the Republic of Azerbaijan summons up the standing of Mahir Aliyev, the ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary of the Republic of Azerbaijan in Lebanon.

In October 5, 2015, with the Presidential edict No. 1435 of the Republic of Azerbaijan appointed Agasalim Shukurov, the ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary of the Republic of Azerbaijan in Lebanon.

On 24th of February 2016, the ambassador of the Republic of Azerbaijan to Lebanese Republic, Aghasalim Shukurov met with the leader of Lebanese Free Patriotic Movement and presidential candidate, Michel Aoun. In the framework of the meeting the ambassador tasked with addressing the recognition of Azerbaijan as a reliable partner worldwide with which to cooperate on cultural and religion, energy, industry and economic matters. M. Aoun touched on the issues of Lebanon’s ongoing national dialogue between the political figures and presidential crisis. The ambassador draw attention to the negotiation process that was conducted under the representatives of the OSCE Minsk Group over the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict where 20% of the territories of Azerbaijan have been occupied and more than one million refugees have been displaced in the consequence of Armenian brutality.

  1. Agreement on mutual protection of investments between the government of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the government of Lebanese Republic. Baku, February 11, 1998. In December 4, 1998, the law of No. 565-IQ was approved by the Republic of Azerbaijan.
  2. Protocol on air communication between the government of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the government of Lebanese Republic. Baku, February 11, 1998. In May 8, 1999, the rule was accepted.
  3. Agreement on mutual support on custom issues between the government of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the government of Lebanese Republic. Baku, February 11, 1998. In May 1, 1999, the decree was approved.
  4. Memorandum of understanding on trade and economic relationships between the government of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the government of Lebanese Republic. Baku, February 11, 1998. In May 8, 1999, the act was acknowledged.
